What should I expect from speech and language therapy?

Following the initial assessment, a therapy plan will be developed that will target the areas of speech and/or language with which your child is struggling.  Therapy with children often looks like play- and it is! But, it is play with a purpose. Always. The different strategies and techniques that are incorporated into our therapy sessions are always evidence-based.

During our sessions we will be using activities and games that hold your child's interest while at the same time working toward the specific goals that we have set, which will help your child become a more efficient communicator.  Please remember, in addition to our therapy sessions, you, as their parent or caregiver, spend the most time with your child, and you are an integral part in the progress they make and success that they realize.  Home practice is super important and necessary to encourage carryover of skills learned and progress made in therapy sessions.

Home practice ideas will be communicated to each child's parent or caregiver at the end of each session.  A summary of the session will be provided within 24 hours upon request.

Therapy is MOST beneficial when regularly scheduled and attended.  Following the initial assessment a frequency recommendation will be suggested.  Typically, therapy sessions are 1-2 visits per week.  Session length is 30-, 45-, or 60-minutes. The last 5-10 minutes of each session are for parent questions and education.  Research shows that shorter sessions with greater frequency per week is more beneficial, especially for younger children who have a harder time staying focused and practicing a skill that may be difficult for them.
